Grades 3-5 In this volume from the Searchlight Books: Animal Superpowers series, each chapter looks at how a particular animal communicates. For instance, giraffes cough to attract mates, hiss and growl to warn of danger, and hum for reasons not yet understood. Honeybee scouts dance to show others where to find nectar or water. Dolphins use clicks, squeals, whistles, and touch to communicate. The concluding chapters discuss rumbling elephants and bobbing birds-of-paradise. While the details about individual species are intriguing, each chapter seems to function as an individual entity, with only a few sentences at the book's beginning and end to give a broader, more meaningful context. Still, the facts are presented in clear, relatively short sentences and illustrated with many color photos. Animal-lovers will find plenty to interest them here.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
