Grades 1-4 This book about birds tries to do it all?and pretty much succeeds. There's plenty of basic information, including bird facts, comparisons, characteristics, migration patterns, habitats, and more. There's also bird lore: songs, folktales, and trivia. Even more notable are activities that range from scientific exploration (bird watching, identifying tracks and calls, experimenting with eggs, mixing up a cake for a bird feeder) to crafts (making a bird bath or a bird house, painting eggs, making a mask or a card, creating a song, dance, or story). All of this content is presented in a pleasingly busy layout, which includes several double-page spreads and occasional horizontally oriented pages. Multiple drawings and eye-catching, colorful illustrations fill the space. Readers will find easy-to-follow directions, relatable examples, and information provided in logical and easily digestible doses. There is also a glossary, an index, and craft templates.
