Math in Nature

Gr 3-6-This series covers various areas of interest such as art, sports, and nature. A photograph of a nautilus shell supports the discussion of the golden ratio, while images of fighter jets and satellites illustrate the use of math for precise navigation. Angles for basketball shots and golf swings are a link to sports. The photos and captions make the connections clear. Throughout the series, "Math in Action!" activities invite readers to test their math skills-for example, calculating the number of hexagonal columns in the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. Answers and tips for the activities are located in the back matter. Math in Art and Sports does an especially good job of representing diverse groups of athletes and artists. VERDICT Perfect to use in the classroom as examples of why math matters, but also visually appealing and an interesting read in general.
