Gr 1-3-An easy-to-read factual overview that focuses on the common characteristics of big cats, intertwining them with individual species' traits. Hunting techniques, distinctive color patterns, and sleeping habits are among the topics discussed. Similarities to house cats are included, bringing the comparison to a level readily understood by young readers. A simplified world outline map shows on which continent the various animals live. However, a two-page layout on the "weretiger" sticks out like a sore thumb. Duran's acrylic illustrations are reminiscent of those in Disney's The Lion King. Their detail, color, and layout enhance and complete the overall appeal of the book. Preservation of the cats' habitats is the message at the end of this tightly written, attractive book.-Joyce Richards, Prairie Grove Elementary School, AR

Gr. 1-3. In this book in the All Aboard Reading series, Duran's dramatic full-color illustrations will lure readers to the simple text about leopards, tigers, lions, jaguars, cougars, and cheetahs. There's no clear organization, but a world map shows the animals' habitat, and Milton includes various facts about how big the animals are, how they hunt their prey, etc. A final section talks about the similarities and differences between these wild animals and domestic cats.
