Grades 4-7 This volume in the Rosen Verified: Current Issues series (6 titles) deals with a particularly complex issue: gender. Using very short chapters--usually two pages in length--it begins by describing gender as "something we experience or feel; it's one of the ways society labels people." Different cultural beliefs surrounding sex and gender are touched upon, such as the two-spirit gender identity recognized by many Native American cultures, before the text moves on with its survey of the subject. Historical and present-day figures feature prominently in the book's many photos and examinations of being intersex, nonbinary, and transgender. A discussion of gender expression, including drag, then leads to a (perhaps too optimistic) promise that "we are headed to a future that accepts all genders." Numerous sidebar features, fast facts, and "Verified" links lead to recommended online resources.
