Grades K-1 Taking his dog in for a checkup, a boy tells the vet that he'd like to become an animal doctor, but he's allergic to cats. Dr. Wells encourages him, commenting that not all vets treat pets. Over the next year, the boy meets a large-animal veterinarian at a horse stable and an aquatic vet at the aquarium. He visits an animal-rescue center where wildlife vets treat and release birds, and a farm where a dairy-cow vet talks to the boy's scout troop about other vets who work in labs, animal hospitals, and veterinary schools. Though the story simply presents a series of encounters, this book will certainly capture the attention of the many beginning readers who love animals. The first-person narrative includes comments and conversations while offering information in a way that's easy to absorb. The cheerful, colorful digital illustrations include a racially diverse cast of characters as well as a girl in a wheelchair and a boy with glasses.
