Gr 3-5-Science blogger and writer Heinecke's latest addition to "The Kitchen Pantry Scientist" series focuses on biology. Single-page biographies about scientists accompany hands-on experiments that have a connection to the scientist's work. Some pairings work better than others; similarly, some of the learning activities are more scientifically based than others. Heinecke does a relatively good job of including both famous and lesser-known biologists. Female scientists and scientists of color are included, such as Susan La Flesche Picotte and Charles Turner. The biographical subjects cover a vast scientific time line, from the 1600s to modern times. The timely volume features references to the development of vaccines, public health, and the initial identification of coronavirus. There are stylized digital illustrations of each biologist and clear, step-by-step photographs of the experiments. The simple layout is easy to navigate. Back matter includes links to web resources and more information, a glossary, and an index. VERDICT Although the featured experiments and biographies are uneven, this attractive title will appeal to parents and caregivers who are looking for hands-on, nonscreen oriented activities for student enrichment.-Jennifer Knight, North Olympic Lib.
