Grades 4-7 Examining natural and man-made disasters, these entries in the Mystery and Mayhem series open an engaging window into history that will attract reluctant readers. Disease can shape the course of history, and Epidemics and Pandemics reveals the effects that sicknesses such as the bubonic plague, influenza, and AIDS have had on a global scale. The layout isn't particularly exciting, but the five true tales per book certainly are. Some seemingly obvious events are excluded (there's no mention of Pompeii in Eruptions or of Ebola in Epidemics, the outbreak kids are most likely to remember), but readers will find a solid mix of familiar and little-known incidents. The text is careful to acknowledge the sociopolitical climate of each time period, pointing out the many instances of racism. Even for those who aren't history fans, interest is bound to be piqued.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
