Gr 3-4-Four classes of historical warriors are highlighted in this graphic collection. Each book provides a basic introduction to the roles these warriors played in their respective cultures, as well as focusing on several important individuals and events in history. These highlighted real-life stories are particularly engaging, offering a vivid glimpse into the worlds described. Digital artwork is detailed, vibrant, and complements the text. Back matter includes additional facts, a time line, and questions for critical thinking that might help readers dig a little deeper. VERDICT Engaging and packed with action, these titles will appeal to a wide range of readers.

Grades 3-6 These entries in the Graphic History series (4 titles) use the illustrated-panel structure of comics and graphic novels to tell about warriors from specific time periods and cultures. Educational text appears in small boxes within individual panels and is supported by thought and speech bubbles that express the characters' ideas. The illustrations also contain details about technical fighting equipment particular to each kind of fighter. Back matter adds helpful details about both geography and the time span?sometimes surprisingly brief?in which each kind of fighter was active. These books will draw visual learners and history buffs into a high-interest aspect of medieval Japan and Europe, but some may be put off by the considerable violence. Some parents and teachers might also object to the multiple tales of unprovoked slaughter in each volume, for which more context would have made the mayhem slightly more palatable. Vikings tells a more cohesive story, from the first Viking raid on an island monastery through Viking exploration and expansion to Iceland, Greenland, and North America and, finally, the decline of Viking power. For those who can stomach the violence, these books present an exciting window into history.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
