Put away the lens of character development and take out the lens of pure adventure. Frank and Joe Hardy are given a mission by their father, which turns into a full-blown rescue event. For the seasoned Hardy fan or the new listener, narrator Bill Irwin brings the thrill of being alongside Frank and Joe as the plot thickens. Irwin is breathless, questioning, eager, discouraged, and optimistic--just as the boys are, and he voices supporting roles with a hint of each character. Be ready to jump, as the sound effects are most realistic! A.R. (c) AudioFile 2002, Portland, Maine

Gr 3-6-Joe and Frank Hardy are off for adventure as they and their father track down a drug-smuggling ring that might be using the abandoned house on the cliff as a base. Then their father disappears and it's up to the boys to save him. Bill Irwin narrates the book by Franklin Dixon (S&S, 1927) with plenty of expression. Each character is given a different voice, and the sound quality and pacing are excellent. Sound effects and background music add to the production, making it seem like a radio play. Listeners will be on the edge of their seats as no chapter passes without deadly peril, unscrupulous criminals, kidnappings, or hot pursuit. Sure, the book is a tad shallow, but the intended audience will enjoy it for the action and not quibble about substance. This would be particularly useful for reluctant readers, and might serve as a gateway into the rest of the series.-Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA
