School Library Journal

March 1, 2005
Gr 2-4 -The first four volumes of Dan Gutman's "My Weird School" series receive a rib-tickling treatment on this audiobook. Second grader A.J. doesn't know quite what to make of the strange grown-ups at his school. In "Miss Daisy Is Crazy!", his teacher claims not to know anything as she cleverly tricks her students into learning. In "Mr. Klutz Is Nuts!", the principal is willing to resort to anything, including dressing up in a gorilla suit or reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the top of the flagpole, to motivate his students to read or do math problems. In "Mrs. Roopy Is Loopy!", the librarian assumes a different persona, from George Washington to Paul Revere, in nearly every library class. And in "Ms. Hannah Is Bananas!", the art teacher insists that everything is art, including old newspapers. Listeners will get the point: A.J.'s weird school is a pretty neat place. Narrator John Beach perfectly captures A.J.'s bewilderment and little-boy attitude, whether describing how much he hates school or relating tales of dealing with Andrea, the class know-it-all. Though the stories start to sound alike after awhile, young fans will not be disappointed. -"Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia"
