Calligraphy usually connotes artistic--and, perhaps, difficult to achieve--writing. Enter hand lettering artist Ensign, who breaks all the rules of fanciful lettering while generating six very different, easy-to-emulate styles, using readily accessible tools like Crayola super tip pens. Start, first, by understanding the structure of letters (baseline, midline, and capline), lettering styles, and required tools and supplies. Four consecutive chapters build the reader's capabilities (and confidence), beginning with faux calligraphy or thickened letters and moving on to laying out quotes. Lots of practice worksheets plus 12 projects enable novices to learn quickly with satisfying results. While maybe not as immediately recognizable as Helvetica or Times Roman, Ensign's lettering style additions--monoline, chunky faux, flourished, print, elegant, and brush pen faux--will turn illegible scribbles into intended inscriptions.
