Its 1904, and Dr. Astrid Bjorklund is trying desperately to stop the measles epidemic on the Red Bud Indian Reservation. She knows that if she fails, there will be irreparable damage to the already strained relationship between the Sioux and the nearby townspeople of Blessing, North Dakota. Astrid has taken on this project at great personal cost. The man she loves, Joshua Landsverk, is very much opposed to her work on the reservation but keeps his reasons secret. The hard choices between family and career are extreme for a woman in the early twentieth century, and Snelling skillfully shows the effect on all involved.
