Briggs's second entry in her Alpha and Omega series (after Cry Wolf) follows married werewolves Anna and Charles. A conference is arranged to address the wolves' concerns of being outed to humans, but things go awry when some wolves are attacked by a vampire gang. Anna and Charles's relationship feels tender and real, and Briggs entwines wolf and human behavior to create a believable cast of characters. The setting is well described, the pace quick, and the action keeps readers coming back for more. Verdict Fantasy readers, especially those who enjoy paranormal romance, will best appreciate this title. [Dabel Brothers Publishing will adapt Cry Wolf as a comic book series in August, and Ace will publish a graphic novel of the first four installments, the imprint's first foray into the graphic novels, in November.-Ed.]-Jennifer Draper, Pickering P.L., Ont.

Briggs Cry Wolf (2008) introduced werewolves Charles and Anna, who now anchor the second novel in the series. Charles is a dominant werewolfan alphawhile his wife Anna is an omega, a werewolf with the rare ability to pacify other wolves. Charles father, Bran, the leader of his pack, has decided to take the werewolves public by announcing their existence to human society. To that end, he sends Charles and Anna to Seattle to meet with leaders of werewolf packs from around the world, some not as eager as Bran is to reveal their presence to humans. Charles is immediately challenged by the French werewolf Jean Chastel, who takes an unhealthy interest in Anna. After Anna is attacked by vampires disguising themselves as wolves, Charles realizes someone is actively working against him to sabotage the proceedings. When the human wife of the British pack leader is slaughtered by the vamps, Charles and Anna go into overdrive to find the traitor. Briggs Mercy Thompson series (beginning with Moon Called, 2006) has garnered her a following, and fans of the vampire series by Charlaine Harris and Mary Jane Davidson will also enjoy Briggs fantasy adventures.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2009, American Library Association.)
