Y'Grok Eban, a Montagnard who risked everything in order to help American soldiers in Vietnam, dies in the North Carolina hills where he has lived since being allowed to leave his homeland. The funeral home of Clayton and Clayton is set to bury him when his body is stolen. Ex-policeman Bruce Clayton, who now is running the business, begins working with Sheriff Tommy Lee Wadkins, whose life was saved by Y'Grok in Vietnam. Their investigation leads to a U.S. senator, a three-star general, and a movie star, all of whom were touched by Y'Grok's help and are now in town for his funeral. de Castrique ("Grave Undertaking") has a deft touch when it comes to detailing interpersonal relationships and the manner in which people conduct themselves honorably. For all of its sadness, this is a very uplifting story and illustrates the human spirit at its best. The author lives in North Carolina.
