In the first of her new Private Justice series, Hannon (Deadly Pursuit) introduces us to Moira Harrison, a Pulitzer-nominated reporter who finds herself in the midst of her own mystery after an automobile accident she is involved in leaves her searching for a victim who has vanished. Harrison turns for help to Cal Burke, a retired homicide detective who has partnered with Jim Devlin, a former undercover ATF officer, and Connor Sullivan, an ex-Secret Service agent, to establish Phoenix Inc., a detective agency where the pursuit of justice seems to trump either the viability of a case or a client’s ability to pay. Intrigued by strange coincidences she has uncovered, the PIs agree to take on Harrison’s case despite the lack of solid leads. Details emerge slowly, creating a suspenseful thriller that allows the reader to develop theories along with the detectives. Romantic tension underlies Harrison’s and Burke’s relationship from the moment they meet, but the mystery remains central to the well-crafted plot. Hannon’s intricately developed characters struggle with complex moral issues, bringing into question whether the ends ever do justify the means. An engaging, satisfying tale that will no doubt leave readers anxiously anticipating the next installment.

Driving home through a thunderstorm, reporter Moira Harrison gets lost and, after swerving to avoid hitting a pedestrian, runs into a tree. Right before she blacks out, a stranger opens the car door and tells Moira he'll call for help. Confusion ensues when she wakes and finds herself still alone in the car, no help in sight. She tries to tell others what happened that night, but nobody seems to believe her, including the police. Can it be that someone is trying to keep what happened that night a secret? VERDICT This fast-paced, suspenseful series debut novel is typical Hannon ("Guardians of Justice" series), a blend of action and romance, and is sure to please her fans. Recommend it also to those who enjoy titles by Dee Henderson.

Late one dark, rainy night, newspaper reporter Moira Harrison hits a woman frantically waving at her from the middle of an unlit rural road. Moira does her best to stop her car, but it spins out of control. Moira desperately informs the Good Samaritan who stops a few minutes later about the struck woman, and, after helping Moira, he assures her he will take care of matters. When Moira wakes up in her car an hour later, there is absolutely no evidence of either the woman or the man. The police believe Moira may have been imagining things due to the concussion she received, but Moira knows she saw a woman in the road. The only one willing to help Moira is private detective Cal Burke. Double-RITA winner Hannon begins a new romantic-suspense series, and this novel's fast-paced plot and compelling characters (including a surprisingly complex villain) make it an excellent suggestion for inspirational-fiction fans as well as readers who enjoy Mary Higgins Clark's subtly chilling brand of suspense.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2012, American Library Association.)
