Dr. Fredrika Bimm, a cranky marine biologist known as Fred, begins to get in touch with her mermaid side when she is summoned to attend a pelagic in the Caymans where all the merpeopleare meeting to decide whether to allow humans to know they exist. Her two suitors are both in attendance: Prince Artur, becausehe is the next in line to rule the merpeople, and wildly wealthy marine biologist Thomas, because it would be unsporting for Artur to deny him access to Fredrika.
