De Hartingh and Craven-Smith-Milnes, both authorities on Vietnam art and history, explore extant examples of vernacular, French colonial, and modern buildings to show how these influences have shaped Vietnamese architecture, particularly domestic architecture. Photographer Luca Invernizzi Tettoni's lavish color images of interiors and gardens depict everything from hill tribes' dwellings at the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology to the French colonial Hanoi Opera House. The nearly 20 homes show how contemporary residents have adapted vernacular and French colonial homes to their needs and how inhabitants of modern dwellings have infused a Vietnamese style in their decor with furniture and decorative accessories.
