The Montessori method of education has expanded over the past decades, moving beyond its early focus on preschool education to the elementary and secondary levels. But how would Maria Montessori have advised the parents of children through age three? The authors, cofounders of a Montessori school in Lake Bluff, IL, here present practical information based on workshops they have created for such parents. Following an overview of Montessori's life and work that includes insights into the pedagogical foundations of her methods, they detail the preparation of a home environment that will facilitate a child's developmental growth. Parents who embrace Montessori's approach will find this a marvelous guide to child rearing, and prospective teachers wishing to gain insights into the Montessori method will value it as a clear and concise introduction. Highly recommended for public libraries with parenting collections and for academic libraries supporting child development or teacher education programs.-Jean Caspers, Linfield Coll.
