The titles of Popcak's (God Help Me!) previous works suggest his commitment to spiritual guidance. His most recent posits seven "longings" (abundance, dignity, justice, peace, trust, well-being, communion) that relate to the notions of the seven deadly sins and the seven heavenly virtues. These desires, the author argues, allow us to use our yearnings in order to grow closer to God. He even invokes the notion of theosis (becoming godlike) as God's wish for us. Theosis is not a commonly used concept in Catholic theology, and it is compelling to see it here. Further, Popcak's insights, not limited to pastoral or marital counseling, as in his previous works, should be illuminating to a wider range of readers. VERDICT A devout and refreshing approach to personal spiritual growth, this title should be of interest to individual seekers and spiritual counselors alike.
