The needs of older college students vary from those of undergraduates who attend college soon after high school. This beautifully organized guide is indispensable to first-time college students regardless of entry point and especially useful for adults returning to college later in their careers. Klein-Collins, associate vice president of research at the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), a nonprofit aimed at assisting adult learners, and a team of contributors who work, or have worked, at CAEL, address important topics such as considering career opportunities, taking advantage of previously earned college credits, seeking financial aid, and balancing an academic schedule with other responsibilities. The language is clear and relatively jargon free, and rich with valuable examples. Useful appendixes include college rankings, a glossary of terms, tips for staying organized, and compelling vignettes about nontraditional students. VERDICT Highly recommended for collections focused on student success, career planning, or academic advising, and a superb option for adult learners interested in returning to or starting college.--Elizabeth Connor, Daniel Lib., The Citadel, Military Coll. of South Carolina, Charleston
