From off the beaten path comes forest medicine expert Li's (chair, Japanese Society for Forest Medicine) definitive guide to forest therapy. An immunologist at Tokyo's Nippon Medical School and later Stanford University's School of Medicine, Li says the antidote to many of life's stresses lies in the Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku, a method of tree bathing, or savoring nature and all it has to offer. He combines scientific research that links the benefits of forests to human health and expands on this knowledge in a walking journey of the outdoors, identifying the sights and scents of the natural environment that relax and rejuvenate the body. VERDICT Simply perusing the many photographs of trees that accompany the calming text is sure to soothe the most resistant of hearts.
