Most modern workplaces are chaotic and detrimental, argue Fried and Hansson (Rework; Remote). Happily, there's an alternative. In this guide, they share what has worked for their software company, Basecamp: namely, the concept of "Calm." "Calm is reasonable expectations.... Calm is about 40 hours of work a week." The authors dole out advice on fostering a healthy environment, from getting rid of the shared work calendar to allowing workers to go entirely off the grid when on vacation. They also suggest offering benefits such as paid sabbaticals, free gym memberships, and continuing education--options that help employees, not employers. VERDICT Anyone running small but successful businesses, especially those who care more about employees' welfare than the bottom line, may appreciate Fried and Hansson's practical, plainspoken advice.--Melissa Lockaby, Univ. of North Georgia Libs., Dahlonega
