Starred review from April 1, 2019
Business leader Bill Campbell was influential in the growth of companies including Google, Apple, and Intuit, where he was CEO. He was reputed to live by his self-created playbook, which focused on relationships. Since his death in 2016, three of those impacted by his coaching have collected Bill's principles and stories to help business leaders and managers develop higher-performing teams. Authors and former Google executives Schmidt, Rosenberg, and Eagle deliver a conversational-style volume with chapters from Your Title Makes You a Manager, Your People Make You a Leader to The Yardstick. Stories showcase Bill in action, like his weekly lunches with engineers from Intuit, where he would learn directly about bottlenecks and pain points. The book is also laced with Bill's tips, including money's not about money and work the team, then the problem. Each of these is followed by an insightful story that illustrates how to effectively carry out the idea or understand the concept. The book has real-world applications, and those who are in leadership positions?or who want to be?will find it valuable.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
