This new book by the author of Heroes in the Night (2013) and Monster Hunters (2015) takes readers where few outsiders have gone: inside the secure facilities, into the homes, and inside the minds of people who are actively preparing for an impending apocalypse. The exact nature of the apocalypse they anticipate is unclear?could be nuclear war, could be climate related, could be of a religious nature, could even be the rise of the undead?but one thing is clear: these men and women, who are often written off as crazy or delusional, can be rational, intelligent, and intensely dedicated. Like Jon Ronson (author of Them: Adventures with Extremists, 2002), Krulos immerses himself in the world he's writing about, capturing the flavor of his subjects' lives, their passion and dedication. Readers expecting a jolly, fun-poking adventure may be surprised to find that not all of the people Krulos meets in the "prepper" subculture are zoned in on zombies; some are focused on genuinely frightening and sobering real-world issues.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
