There are millions of podcasts, but only 16 percent of them last beyond nine episodes, writes Meinzer, host of the By the Book podcast, in this practical-minded manual that asks pointed questions intended to help readers find their voice and refine their product. Her tips on defining one’s niche, cohosting, landing and conducting interviews, getting the right equipment (she recommends using “decent,” not top-end, mics), and growing one’s audience are clear and direct. Readers may be surprised at how much work and preparation goes into what might appear to be a couple of folks hanging out and shooting the breeze for an entertaining 45 minutes or so, but that’s precisely Meinzer’s point. Her many tips, such as to keep one’s opening banter brief, cultivate diversity (66% of hosts are white men), and develop a thick skin for harsh criticism, will also go a long way. Dabblers who think it will be easy because “my friend Dave and I are really funny” will (rightfully) be discouraged, but those serious about mastering podcasting will find Meinzer’s insights invaluable. Everyone thinks the hard part about starting a podcast is the technology?microphones, editing software, etc.?but, according to Meinzer, none of that matters if the foundation for your podcast isn't sound (ha). Fortunately, this guide breaks down the steps necessary for anyone with a story to share to do so in podcast form, based on her years of experience as a podcast host and producer (she is currently the co-host of By the Book). To oversimplify: start with defining both the "what" and "why" of the show, nail down a structure, then pick a host (or two), invite great guests, and grow your audience. Each big step is broken down into smaller pieces, made to seem manageable by Meinzer's jaunty, affirming writing style. The advice is solid and wide-ranging as she discusses how to deal with everything from cohost conflicts to using movie clips. But that stuff can be found elsewhere; the real value of this book is the balance of clear instruction with motivation as Meinzer encourages aspiring podcasters to dig deep into what they want to share, while providing them with the tools to make their voices heard.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
