In this eminently practical and relentlessly encouraging guide, actress and comedian Raphael and EMILY’s List consultant Black lay out a road map for women considering running for office. Their plan centers on a 21-point checklist that takes readers through identifying which office would allow them to address the problems they care about, choosing a fund-raising goal, and determining how to best manage their online histories. Six relatable composites of potential candidates, complete with cartoon headshots—including a Native nurse, a millennial barista, a veteran, and an Asian-American news anchor—give voice to common concerns. The authors take down the idea of not being qualified through a refrain of “men are not waiting,” a plethora of profiles of and quotations from women in politics, and an affirmation that “your experience is your expertise” and the only qualification needed is a desire to create change. They lift up the importance of diverse leadership and turn “we need you” into a mantra to encourage immediate action and claiming “a seat at the table.” They also pack an incredible amount of information into a friendly, cool, and highly graphical workbook-style format. This is an indispensable resource for women with any interest in public service; its advice is a powerful bridge from vague dreams to making them happen.

Starred review from October 1, 2019
Actress Raphael (Grace and Frankie) and policy adviser Black not only encourage women to run for office in this part roadmap, park toolkit, part workbook, they also provide the nuts and bolts for how to do it, from detailing various government positions (e.g., school districts, municipal, state) and the kind of staff needed to launch a campaign (e.g., legal adviser, field director) to tips for creating the perfect pitch and raising funds. Sprinkled throughout are brief profiles of successful female politicians who overcame the odds--today women represent 23 percent of Congress and less than 28 percent of state legislatures--to win an election. VERDICTApproachable and practical, this volume will be an indispensable resource for women considering a political run. For all library collections.

There are more women running for office now than any other time in U.S. history. When actress and activist Raphael tipped her hat into the ring, she realized there was not a guide for women on navigating political waters. She paired with Black, a policy adviser and former chief of staff for Emily's List, the largest resource for women in politics, to write just such a guide. Represent centers around a 21-point document called I'm Running for Office: The Checklist, covering everything from where to run and how to fundraise to how to realistically work running for office into your life. Each chapter walks readers through a point on the checklist. In between chapters, the authors interview female politicians, such as Kamala Harris and Nancy Pelosi. The book includes many valuable resources, such as a list of organizations in each state that help women who are entering politics. This timely, step-by-step guide will appeal to women of all ages who are considering a political career.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
