In this debut, Huang, (Harvard Business Sch.), who specializes in entrepreneurship, details 13 guiding principles for successful startups. Complete with examples and anecdotes, Huang delves into obstacles that entrepreneurs face, including the fact that new ventures often have flaws and shortcomings. What's key, as the book's subtitle suggests, is to make the most of adversity, and not view it as a challenge or an obstacle on the path to success. While the book is aimed at entrepreneurs, many of the examples are also applicable to individuals and their personal brands. VERDICT An Ivy League short course for the price of a book. Huang's guidance will resonate with avid readers of business books.--Steven Silkunas, Fernandina Beach, FL

Hard work is important, but it is not the only thing that leads to success. Huang, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Harvard Business School, has found that success doesn't only come from dedication, passion, and credentials. Rather, the ability to guide others' perceptions of our abilities and backgrounds is key to achieving our goals. Huang outlines her framework for giving oneself an edge: Enrich, Delight, Guide, and Effort. Within the four-part approach, she explains how to focus one's strengths to turn potential disadvantages into unique value-adds. She uses examples of well-known entrepreneurs, regular businesspeople, and her own background to demonstrate how one can shift a potential drawback into an asset. By using approachable examples, Huang convincingly argues for her 13 Edge Principles. Alongside the strength of her ideas, Huang's writing is remarkable. She engages readers through delightful footnotes and brings a sense of authenticity through her personal reflections on how to gain an edge. Edge is a thought-provoking study and resource for anyone wondering why effort alone doesn't always seem to be enough.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
