Based on the life of a South Carolina woman, Elizabeth Waties Allston Pringle (1845-1921), this saga of the postbellum South is a vivid, romantic tale. Charlotte Fraser comes back to her family's plantation with the intention of resuming the production of the Carolina Gold rice for which it is known. However, she finds this impossible since all the slaves are now free and workers are in short supply. To make ends meet, Charlotte tutors the two daughters of widowed neighbor Nicholas Betancourt. As deeper relationships develop among Charlotte, Nicholas, and the children, Charlotte discovers that Nicholas has legal claim to her plantation as well as his own. The author skillfully captures the mood and essence of the South after the Civil War. The hardships and unlikely friendships that spring up from changed circumstances owing to the abolition of slavery are well portrayed. This gentle romance illustrates beautifully the power of faith and hope in times of great adversity and uncertainty. VERDICT With its intricate descriptions and realistic dialog, this ultimately uplifting story is recommended for fans of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind.
