The premise of this audiobook, persuasively narrated by the author, is that workers who believe that their skills will never be replaced by machines--for example, drivers, writers, lawyers, and even programmers--are in for a rude awakening. Smarter machines will put almost every job up for grabs. So what's a job seeker to do? Colvin posits that instead of technical skills, future job applicants will need unique "human" qualities, in particular, empathy and narrative storytelling skills. (Audiobook narrators, take note!) How do we prepare for this brave new world? Some skills can be learned--particularly those associated with successful group interaction--but some are hardwired. (This is bad news for guys because empathy is directly related to testosterone levels). One thing is certain: It's never too early to reboot your job skills.
