This is the latest warning about the sixth great extinction on Earth, an extinction that is in progress now. Coauthors Ceballos, Anne H. Ehrlich, and Paul R. Ehrlich are well-known scientists who aim to provoke action on this issue, which they describe as resulting from human carelessness and exploitation. Each year, thousands of known species vanish owing to habitat destruction, poaching, pesticide toxins, and climate change. The authors focus on the status of selected bird and mammal species; both extinctions and drastic declines, noting that only a few have recovered from endangered status. They advocate wildlife conservation: rewilding North America, increasing other protected areas, promoting ecotourism, restoring threatened populations, and carrying on regulated hunting to raise funds. They also recommend reducing human consumption and controlling population. VERDICT This powerful message of loss, in plain language with 83 color photographs, should resonate with readers interested in nature and the environment. It may stimulate support for conservation activity.--David R. Conn, formerly with Surrey Libs., BC
