Many authors have tackled the issues of family business from inception to inheritance. Yet few, if any, have addressed leadership problems stemming from credibility, relationships, mission/vision/values, and other human (and humane) topics. Keyt, a specialist in the art and science of family business, opens the doors of many well-known and not-so-famous firmsFerragamo, Wrigley, Tysonthrough in-depth and rather revealing interviews woven throughout his exposition. One CEO had to fire her younger brother, another to cope with his own addiction issues, and a third to manage and elevate feelings of self-worth. Keyt follows the journey from son/daughter to family leader, including frank words about forming a personal vision (e.g., I am not my father ), increasing self-awareness (through coaching, 360-reviews, therapy, and handling entitlement issues). It's just as much a series of leadership lessons as it is a book about the more than 20-million family firms in the U.S. today. A smart guide for parents, siblings, relatives, and any employees toiling in their companies.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2015, American Library Association.)
