This second installment in the Kincaid Brides series continues the Connealy tradition of cowboys, laughs, and love. Ethan Kincaid weds Audra Gilliland in a marriage of convenience orchestrated by his brother Rafe. Ethan brings a lifetime of hiding from the pain of his childhood, and Audra brings two young daughters from her first marriage. Her past, however, catches up when miscreants come looking for a fortune stolen by her first husband. Ethan’s past surfaces when he must face his greatest fear to save the woman he has come to love, and Audra must discover an inner strength she thought she’d never find. This tale is long on action—gunfights, fire, getting lost in caves—but short on depth as the drama and romance unfold lickity-split. Readers looking for a leisurely stroll through the Colorado countryside won’t find it here; those eager to explore the post–Civil War Colorado Territory will love riding headlong through this rollicking tale. Rafe Kincaid orchestrates a marriage of convenience for his brother, Ethan. Audra Gilliland accepts the arrangement to free her newlywed stepdaughter from having to care for her. But Ethan and Audra immediately lock horns when Audra tries to prove to the overprotective Ethan that she can take care of herself. Soon, a shady character from her first husband's past arrives, and danger lurks in every corner. VERDICT Quick pacing and lots of action make this sophomore series title (after Out of Control) a good choice for Dee Henderson fans who don't mind the genre leap to historical romances. [Coming in August is the third book in the series, Over the Edge.--Ed.]
