City planner, former Central Park administrator and longtime resident Rogers (Landscape Design: A Cultural and Architectural History) writes about seven of the many parks around New York City. Accompanied by expert guides, the author visits central Staten Island and Freshkills Park, Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, Roosevelt Island, Manhattan's Inwood Hill Park, the Central Park Ramble, and the High Line, providing a natural, historical, and social perspective for each locale. Though the parks supply food and shelter for wildlife and continuity with the city's past, they are reshaped by different human agendas. The Jamaica Bay tour raises the concern that remaining marshes there are at risk of being filled in for development. The Freshkills chapter explains work in progress transforming a sprawling garbage dump into parkland. The book includes color maps and directions to each site. Vibrant photographs illustrate the author's walks. VERDICT Not a field guide, this is on-the-ground appreciation of some diverse nature oases, with sketches of dedicated staff and volunteers who help maintain them. Sophisticated citizens of the region and intrepid visitors will enjoy Rogers's descriptions of these special places.--David R. Conn, formerly with Surrey Libs., BC
