Prolific author Newton (Substance Abuse) begins this guide with a startling statistic: drug abuse, specifically among young white males, was recently revealed to be the number one factor responsible for a major death rate spike not seen since the Vietnam War era. Narrative chapters provide context, definitions, and a history of substance abuse, including the types and effects of commonly consumed drugs (such as alcohol) and methods for prevention and treatment. He also dedicates a chapter to substance abuse specifically among teenagers. VERDICT A solid option for anyone studying or dealing with this deadly issue.--Judy Quinn, formerly with Library Journal

This volume in the Contemporary World Issues series delivers a look into the increasing prevalence of substance abuse among adolescents. This work outlines substance abuse throughout both ancient and modern world history, including the tracing of popular substances back to their first appearance in history, along with exploring alternative uses of the substance across time, such as for health benefits, an indicator of societal status or wealth, or for religious purposes. The book also provides an overview of the misuse of substances, their various effects on the human body, and treatment and prevention approaches. A Perspectives section offers a unique blend of personal and intellectual narratives on different aspects of substance abuse. With the inclusion of data, legal documents, quality sources referenced throughout the book, and an annotated bibliography at the end, this source is a great starting point for research.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
