Social media has forever changed the way that we think, live, and relate to one another and the world. In this edifying encyclopedia, Hanson (Univ. of Mass., Amherst; 24/7: How Cell Phones and the Internet Change the Way We Live, Work, and Play) outlines the many terms that are now ubiquitous in everyday conversation. Covering everything from telephone company AT&T to Facebook cofounder Mark Zuckerberg, this book comprises a wealth of clarifying information for librarians who need a handy reference guide to the language of social media. The author's intention is to bridge the gap between those who have grown up with these technologies and those who did not. No matter where readers are on the familiarity spectrum, this selection will be of tremendous use. For those familiar with social media, the entries on the development of the World Wide Web and telephone service will be an intriguing history lesson on how we got to where we are. For those who experienced the development of the social media wave as it has happened, this is a comprehensive tool that weaves all the threads together. VERDICT Recommended for academic libraries high school level and above and public libraries.--Christine Sharbrough, Tewksbury P.L., MACall for ReviewersLibrary Journal is looking for additional reference reviewers (in particular, those with a focus on science, history, social sciences, or technology).
