Criminologist Steinmetz (sociology, Kansas State Univ.) introduces readers to an unusual approach to studying and understanding hacker culture. While mainstream and public perceptions of hackers are filled with stereotypes, what Steinmetz does with great care and excellence in this work is surface the human voices of hacker culture in an effort to comprehend their perspectives and motivations. Through these interviews, Steinmetz reveals ideas on government and law enforcement by hackers, which challenge many preconceived notions of these groups. Later chapters interpret the themes from the interviews through a lens of radical criminology in order to better understanding hacker culture. VERDICT This welcome addition to the canon of hacker studies will particularly engage readers of academic criminology and sociology at the intersections of technology and policy.--Jim Hahn, Univ. Lib., Univ. of Illinois, Urbana
