In this fourth edition of her useful guide, Seattle resident Hacking updates information about 120 walks around Seattle, Everett, Tacoma, and Olympia, WA. Hacking only includes paths in natural places on public lands that are not too distant from the city. A few paragraphs provide an overview of the environment and experience of each location, touching on such topics as flora, fauna, seasonal variations, and human history. Details of each walk include length, type of surface, steepness, who uses the path (e.g., bicycles, horses), dog rules, connecting trails, access for people with disabilities, and park amenities such as picnic tables, boat launches, and interpretive signs. Icons indicate settings: forest, river, nature preserve, Puget Sound, lake or wetland, meadow or farmland, and mountain views. Address, directions, contact info, photos, and maps accompany each site's description. Scattered throughout are text boxes on additional subjects such as creatures typically found in wetlands, safety advice when near rivers, and why shells can be discovered in the forest (birds). VERDICT This title is for anybody who would like to stroll through nature's beauty in the greater Puget Sound region.--Janet Clapp, N. Clarendon, VT
