Starred review from September 15, 2007
Jamie MacPherson (introduced in Until the Knight Comes, 2006) has matured from a neglected tenth son into one of the MacKenzies most valued knights, but when he learns that a bridge collapse has taken the lives of all his brothers, he obeys his fathers long-awaited summons with mixed feelings. When the bewitching sprite glimpsed in the moonlight is revealed as his intended bride, he is quickly reconciled to his fate, but dastardly acts and ghostly sightings soon convince Jamie that his clanand his new brideare in danger. Once again, Welfonders careful scholarship and attention to detail vividly re-create the lusty, brawling days of medieval Scotland with larger-than-life chivalrous heroes and the dainty but spirited maidens chosen by the old gods and blessed by the saints to partner them. The Highland magic wielded by Devorgilla of Doon and her trusted fox, Somerled, as well as the return of much-loved characters from previous stories, will enchant Welfonders steadfast readers and garner new ones among fans of paranormal historical romance.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2007, American Library Association.)
