The legacy of Lou Gehrig (1903-41) is more than baseball. It is about the strength of his character during the most tragic of times. Nicknamed "The Iron Horse," Gehrig is known not only for his impressive baseball career, but also for his struggle with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), which ultimately took his life two years after he was diagnosed at age 37. Sportswriter Sandomir (Bald Like Me) has written a fascinating book about the life of Gehrig and the 1942 film depicting his experience: The Pride of the Yankees. Using secondhand accounts from actors Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright, Sandomir tells the story of how the film came to be made. He also brings to life Lou's devoted wife, Eleanor, and Samuel Goldwyn's role in producing the film. The text is filled with captivating behind-the-scenes stories. VERDICT In this emotional and fascinating tale, Sandomir brilliantly captures the spirit of the film and Gehrig's life. Film lovers and baseball fans will enjoy.--Gus Palas, Ela Area P.L., Lake Zurich, IL

The author dives into the making of the classic 1942 baseball movie PRIDE OF THE YANKEES, about New York Yankees great Lou Gehrig. The book details the choices for the actors, alternative scenes, cutting-room floor material, and the involvement of Gehrig's wife, Eleanor. Kevin Stillwell narrates straightforwardly throughout, except when it comes to Gehrig's mother and the German-born actress who played her in the movie. It's a serious narration, clearly done and appropriate for the work. The movie has survived generations because of Gehrig's iconic 1939 "luckiest man" speech, which even those who don't know the history of baseball are familiar with.
