Suppose you are in a woods, in a desert, or on a mountain, and you lose the trail, injure a leg, or encounter a bear. What do you do? Being far from emergency services, your circumstances may quickly become catastrophic. Journalist Sprinkle offers advice for surviving many wilderness hazards. In chapters about predators, small animals and insects, weather, injuries and illnesses, and difficult terrain, the author tells stories pulled from the news about people whose survival or deaths resulted from their responses to the perils of backcountry adventure. He analyzes their actions and offers rules for safety. Generally, those who studied trails, dressed appropriately, packed well, and planned for danger survived because prevention is far more effective than emergency actions. The title is somewhat misleading, as the advice from this helpful book can prove valuable to many who are never lost, stranded, or aloneanyone trying to enjoy wilderness experiences will find this useful. A good fit for adventure-travel collections.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2017, American Library Association.)
