Following its treatment of Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson, Sterling adds two more titles on American masters to the Poetry for Young People series: Carl Sandburg, edited by Frances Schoonmaker Bolin, illustrated by Steven Arcella, and Edgar Allan Poe, edited by Brod Bagert, illustrated by Carolynn Cobleigh. Each poem is accompanied by definitions of difficult words ($14.95 each, 48p, ages 7-up ISBN 0-8069-0818-1; -0820-3 May).

I forced the last stone into its position; I plastered it up. Against the new masonry I re-erected the old rampart of bones. There's a reason Edgar Allan Poe is still widely popular after nearly 175 years. His tales are well told, timeless, and darned creepy. Jim Gallant's readings of "The Masque of the Red Death," "Silence," and "The Cask of Amontillado" do an excellent and understated job of bringing out the rhythms and meanings in Poe's richly drawn text. A subtle original musical score provides an appropriately dark background. This is a classy production and a nice introduction to some of Poe's best-known tales. B.P.
