Chasse knocks herself off her own pedestal in this irreverent answer to the 2005 sleeper hit film she co-created, What the Bleep Do We Know?! The spiritual seeker who seemed to have all the answers has come to doubt the neat conclusions that once satisfied. In her distinctively blunt style, Chasse’s self-help offering takes a critical yet entertaining look at the accepted spiritual wisdom, or “sacred cows,” of everything from quantum physics to the law of attraction. Chasse looks these ideas straight in the eye, and concludes that we don’t have to—and shouldn’t—take anything at face value. “We can even interrupt the brain’s process long enough to decide whether or not we want to believe something,” she writes. Chasse’s own reckoning process relies on neuroscience, linguistics, philosophy, popular culture, and her personal experiences; the scattered approach can feel a little manic at times, as we rush from one idea to the next. Her sharp wit and insistence on getting at the truth behind each of her own sacred cows, however, makes this a provocative and engaging read.

Chasse (film cocreator, What the Bleep Do We Know!?) is candid and comic, sometimes alarmingly so, about the pleasures and inconveniences of her life. The film, above, that she cocreated was widely admired and criticized, but what she wants to share with us is the humor and resilience that help us get through life's small miseries and great self-doubts. VERDICT Fans of the film will want to see what Chasse has to say, especially in anticipation of her follow-up film, due in May of this year.
