Apple's latest update of Mac OS X, called Tiger, requires libraries to update their collections; each of these basic guides is appropriate for all public libraries. For absolute beginners, "Easy" lives up to its name, featuring large, full-color, labeled screen shots; step-by-step instructions; large print; and minimal text. A great title for visual learners. The full-color "Teach Yourself VISUALLY" is also appropriately titled, with minimal, step-by-step text and extensive screen shots and illustrations. A bit more extensive than "Easy"; another great choice for beginning visual learners. For new Mac users, "Getting Started" has more verbiage for those wanting deeper directions; its friendly tone and clear instructions provide ample guidance, while labeled color screen shots and numbered steps illustrate how to complete common tasks. Each chapter is set up as a lesson, with estimated time to completion and targeted goals. The most thorough of the bunch, "Visual QuickStart" addresses beginning to intermediate users, as well as upgraders. In addition to highlighting new and revised Tiger features, it covers topics from installing and setting up the OS to using utilities. For beginners, "For Dummiesb"" updates older editions with Tiger coverage. Starting with the basics, it moves through completing common tasks, using applications, networking and troubleshooting, the typical "Dummies" "Part of Tens" quick information section, and an appendix on installing Tiger. Sections on system preferences and using the updated Finder are especially useful; sidebars, tips, illustrative screen shots, and checklist items add value. For all libraries. "Upgrading" addresses current but beginning Mac users, offering coverage on installing Tiger (including backing up files and making sure the system can handle the upgrade), setting up the OS, customizing the system, learning the new stuff, and using those features. Large illustrations, minimal text, and step-by-step instructions make this an easy-to-use guide for simple upgrades. Supplement it with more thorough titles.
