Knitwear designer Guy is the author of multiple knitting and crochet books for children, along with Northern Knits and Northern Knits Gifts, which were influenced by researching folk-knitting traditions of Scandinavia. This book is a similar collection of knits for men, women, children, and the home. Detailed instructions to complete 20 projects use a combination of traditional northern European, Nordic, and Baltic folk-knitting techniques to create hats, scarves, sweaters, mittens, gloves, socks, toys, a tote bag, and cushions. These patterns are grouped by their emphasis on folk traditions, folk textures, or folk colors. Charts and photos accompany the text. Authentic and often ancient, motifs commonly used in folk tradition are incorporated into each design. Decorative techniques such as unique cast ons, braiding, steeking, colorwork, thrumming, twined and twisted stiches, specific regional shaping, fringing, and embroidery are also incorporated into the patterns. VERDICT Intermediate and advanced knitters will enjoy making these heirloom items. Working on these projects should take knitters to a higher skill level.--Deborah Broocker, Georgia Perimeter Coll.
