Prosecutor Janet McNeil is convinced that if she can convict Jacob Hall for credit-card fraud, she can ultimately tie him to the Ivory Nation, Arizona's largest white supremacy organization. But as the trial date nears, an important file disappears, a key witness seems reluctant to take the stand, and Janet's consistently competent assistant seems to forget the simplest things she asks him to do. The Ivory Nation is also doing its part to convince Janet to drop the case, with threats that have Janet fearing not only for her own safety but also for that of her family and the young girl she is about to adopt. The only person who understands why pursuing the case is so important to Janet is her neighbor, textbook author Simon Green, but Simon has his share of secrets, leaving Janet wondering if there is anyone she can trust.
