Verdict: An allusive and integrative approach to individual, romantic, and career fulfillment recommended for popular psychology collections. Background: Rejecting a simplistic work-life dichotomy, poet and business consultant Whyte (Crossing the Unknown Sea) offers a metaphor of three interconnecting marriages, each demanding commitment, each nonnegotiable, each in conversation with the others. Whyte demonstrates how each marriage develops in four stages (glimpse or falling in love, pursuit, engagement, and living together or marriage), giving examples from his own life and the lives of famous people (e.g., Jane Austen, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron) to illustrate struggles, pitfalls, and progress in work, relationships, and self-awareness. Whyte's style is lyrical, and his conclusions profound.-Lucille M. Boone, San Jose P.L., CA
