An investigation and synthesis of over 2,400 scientific studies, including the authors' own research, this work on wild parrots, among the most rare and intelligent of birds, was completed by Wright (biology, New Mexico State Univ.) upon the untimely 2011 death of coauthor Toft (evolution & ecology, Univ. of California, Davis). Evolutionary history and behavioral patterns of some 350-odd species are detailed and accompanied by abundant illustrations and nearly 90 color photos of the birds within their natural habitats. Also discussed is the conundrum of conservation efforts: these "most captivating birds" are rare in part owing to their popularity as pets, yet birds that are the product of many captive generations cannot effectively be reintroduced to the wild. All royalties from the sales of this book will be donated to the World Parrot Trust, which, as its director notes in the book's foreword, is "forever with a foot in each camp...to help save [wild parrots] from extinction and to help inform our best practices in captive bird care." VERDICT A rich celebration and study of "the most human of birds."--Judy Quinn, formerly with Library Journal
