Mathematics curricula currently offered in most institutions is designed to give students the algebraic and geometric skills needed for calculus. They are heavy on drill exercises, and most students find them boring. In this cleverly written and frequently entertaining book, math MSc and grad student Wilkes attempts to get around these shortcomings by starting with the more abstract concepts, then developing the necessary tool subjects as needed. He develops the mathematics needed for the study of classical physics up to and including special relativity. However, to do so means inventing special terms and new notation, which he must then morph into the standard terminology and symbols. The result is to multiply the quantity of off-putting "alphabet soup" that so discourages many readers who are trying to learn mathematics on their own. VERDICT This book can be fun reading for people familiar with the subject. A classroom teacher may find in it some interesting heuristic arguments to enhance understanding of certain concepts. Yet, it is neither a textbook nor a popularization and should have a limited readership.--Harold D. Shane, mathematics emeritus, Baruch Coll. Lib., CUNY
