Neil Postman's cogent and lucid analysis of our indiscriminate embrace of technological innovation deserves the widest possible audience. But it is truly a book, abstract, dense and closely reasoned--something to be lingered over and studied. The audiobook format is definitely second choice, except perhaps for a first overview. Still, it would benefit by a more leisurely, engaged reading than it gets from Jeff Riggenbach, who sounds like a very competent announcer disinterestedly transcribing the text to tape. The recording is clear but has numerous small flaws which suggest hasty production. J.N. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Mixing provocative insights and cliched criticisms, Postman defines the U.S. as a society in which technology is deified to a near-totalitarian degree.
